Donations

By choice, Closets, clothes, donate, organizing strategy

Let’s talk about donations. This is a great time of year to go through closets and drawers looking for clothes, toys, and books in good condition to donate. And, if they are not in good condition to recycle or toss! When my children were much younger, I would ask them to please try on their winter clothes in late August early September. We lived in Connecticut and some of the Fall days can surprise you by being chilly. So, I wanted to know what clothes fit and which of the clothes that didn’t fit could be passed on from one…

Thinking about Adopting a Dog or Cat?

By change, donate, home organizing, responsibillity

This weekend there has been lots of publicity here in Atlanta about adopting dogs and cats from our local shelters. The incentives involved waiving adoption fees and, of course, most of the photos showed celebrities cuddling adorable puppies. What’s not to love? I’m a big fan of adopting animals. I’ve almost always had a dog in my home. I grew up with dogs and cats co-existing happily together. Most of my adult life I’ve had dogs and cats – one or two of each – as pets. Right now, I have 2 dogs. Miles Miles is a golden retriever mix….

10 Tips for Stress-Free Holiday Decorating

By Clutter, collections, donate, holiday decorating

I love to decorate my house for Christmas! I love to get out my decorations and scatter them around the house so that most of the common areas have some kind of decoration. So many of these decorations hold beautiful memories for me. Some my children made through the years, some I received as gifts, some I purchased as reminders of places we traveled, but most of my ornaments are needlepoints that I made. I tried to add one or more needlepoint ornament every year! I even get out the children’s read aloud holiday books and display them on a…

Do I Already Have It?

By donate, home organizing, limit, Organizing Strategies, projects, recycle, Spring Cleaning, Today Show

I read a blog post this morning from Joshua Becker, becoming minimalist, about shopping. He suggested that most of us have more than enough in our homes already. Joshua asks the reader to ask themselves ‘what if I don’t?’. What will happen if you don’t buy another pair of jeans? Think about how many you already have. How many pairs of jeans are enough? That is another question for another day. Today my question is: Do I already have it?  Sometimes we overlook things that we already have that can be repurposed to fill a different need. I was watching…

Open Your Eyes!

By accomplish, attitude, chores, collections, donate, recycle, Spring Cleaning

Have you started your spring cleaning? Whether or not you have started this process I recommend that when you do you take the opportunity to really look at the things you are moving around. I think sometimes we are so used to our surroundings that we don’t really see what’s there. I know that I can walk through a room in my house and not really notice the space. Before you begin your spring cleaning spend some time in the room you’re tackling. Open your eyes and take a look as if you were seeing the room or area for…

Is It Spring?

By chores, Closets, clothes, donate, family, plan, projects, recycling, schedule, small steps, Spring Cleaning

Is it feeling like Spring where you live? Here in Atlanta it’s looking a lot like Spring is just around the corner. We’ve had a couple of beautiful sunny days. It was even warm enough over the weekend to enjoy a picnic in the park! The days are longer, the sunshine brighter and all that makes me long to get out in the garden and play in the dirt. However, it’s not quite time to do that so I’m going to use the brighter light and longer days to my advantage inside the house. In other words, it’s time for…

Think Replacement…

By Closets, donate, home organizing, Organizing Strategies, over-abundance, projects, tasks

I often get asked how to organize a closet. Something to remember is that we generally wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the tIme! You know which clothes are your favorites. Since this is true, why are closets so full to over-flowing? My suspicion is that garments are not replaced. By that I mean when shopping for yourself, are you replacing something that is worn or that is either too big or too small or are you shopping because you’d like a new outfit? If you have children, this is something you do already – I hope. First, you sort through their clothes. As…

Let’s Get Started

By accomplish, calendar, celebrate, donate, Planning, projects, schedule, small steps, tasks

I don’t know about you but many times I start a project with a picture of what the end will look like to me. I also typically will have an end time in mind. Is this true for you, too? When you think about beginning a project do you have a vision of the finished project in your mind’s eye along with a completed by date? What happens next? Well, for me, I break the project down into small steps. I like to write each step on a separate line. If I do it on the computer I print it…

Celebrate!

By accomplish, action, attitude, celebrate, donate, mindful, small steps, Time Management

I know it’s the holiday season and parties are being planned and happening. How much fun! I believe (I know you’ve heard this before) that everyday can be a celebration. There’s a young man who works at my local grocery store. When someone says “Hello, How are you?” to him he always replies “I woke up today. It is a good day.” I love this attitude. Celebrate everyday. We tend to celebrate our large successes but what about the everyday small steps that we take toward completion of that large project? Get in the habit of celebrating those, too. Celebrate…
