Back to School – already?

By How To Organize, How to Organize Your Life Blog

It’s hard to believe that school starts here in Atlanta in a couple of weeks. Already there are back to school sales and all the office supply stores have their back to school displays front and center. Are you ready to have your children back into the school day routine? Maybe a better question is: Are your children ready? Did they have school work to complete over the summer? Do you know if they have finished it? If your children are in elementary school it’s a good idea to begin reviewing some of those math facts – addition, subtraction, multiplication…

Going to College?

By How To Organize, How to Organize Your Life Blog

Are you the parent of a rising freshman of college? If you are, I bet there are lots of things on your mind. I’m also sure your child has lots on his mind, too! He (I’m using ‘He’ but you substitute the pronoun ‘She’ if you have a daughter) has probably received information from the college about his new living space (dorm room) and maybe even the names and contact information of his roommate(s). I was at a client’s house a few weeks ago and my client’s son was talking to me about his dorm room. He received the dimensions…

Flying Solo – Are You Moving into Your First Home?

By How To Organize, How to Organize Your Life Blog

Are you about to move into your first home away from your parents’? Are you a parent concerned about your child successfully living on his own? At this time of year many young adults are moving into new situations. They could be moving into a dorm for the first time, moving into a house with friends and starting college or a new job, or perhaps they are newly married and setting up a first home. Whatever the situation there is so much to keep in mind. Jonda Beattie and I are presenting a workshop in July in Metro-Atlanta which will…

Summer Fun

By Control Clutter, How to Organize Your Life Blog

Someone asked me today if I had started to slow down for the summer. Her question took me by surprise. I realized that I don’t slow down at all during the summer any more. I planned my time differently when my children were in school. Then I did slow down during the summer. We planned lazy days by the beach. Some days we played tennis and others we dedicated to water sports. We spent as much time as we could outside engaged in sports, relaxing in the shade, or playing board games. In other words we had lots of fun…

Maintenance

By How to Organize Your Life Blog, Rightsize Your Life

Earlier in May I was honored to have my garden included in the Atlanta Botanical Garden Tour of Gardens. There were 11 gardens on the tour and those who bought tickets could visit the gardens over the course of two days. As you might imagine I worked really hard (as did our landscape designer – Marcia Weber and her crew) to make our garden the best it could be for the tour. The weather worked against us as it was unseasonably hot in April which forced many plants to bloom earlier than usual. While I admit the roses were not…

Closet Organization

By Control Clutter, How to Organize Your Life Blog

Do you practice what you preach? I do. Some people give great advice but then don’t apply it to themselves. Recently I decided it was time to reorganize my closet.  When clients ask me about organizing their closet I ask them a few questions…. 1. Are there clothes in your closet that don’t fit? 2. If the clothes are too big is it worth the alteration cost to have them fitted? 3. Are there clothes that you haven’t worn for more than one season? 4. Are there items that you simply don’t like? This past weekend I asked myself these questions….

What do I do first?

By How To Organize, How to Organize Your Life Blog

I am often asked this question by some clients with lengthy ‘to-do’ lists and by other clients with multiple large scale projects to complete. I do not answer this question directly rather ask my clients to think through the process of prioritizing. They define for me (and in that process clarify to themselves) the importance of the project. Is it time sensitive? What is the ripple effect of this project? Does a colleague’s project hinge on the completion of this project?  What will happen if this project is delayed in order to finish another project? Is this project something the client…

The Benefits of Being Prepared

By Control Clutter, How to Organize Your Life Blog

I read an interesting comment from a friend and colleague, Geralin Thomas, last week. She said (and I’m paraphrasing) ‘I’m the person you want to sit next to on an airplane. I always carry extra magazines, snacks, a nail file and …’ She is prepared to wait. There is a huge benefit in this. Geralin won’t be bored and neither will the person sitting next to her.  When I leave my house for the day I always bring extra bottles of water in a small cooler – just in case. Generally I also have a stash of snacks in that cooler…

Multiple Interests

By How to Organize Your Life Blog, Rightsize Your Life

Do you have multiple interests? I do. I love to garden and now is prime gardening season for me. More on that later. I also love to do fine needlepoint. I have a needlepoint project that I am close to completing and can already see it in its completed form – a pillow! Baking is another interest or hobby I have. My husband loves to have cakes and cookies in the house. His metabolism is so fast that he needs to eat these yummy creations in order to maintain his slim weight – lucky guy! Then there is my business. This…
